Juanito Sherman Scholarship Fund.

The John Bonifacio Sherman Scholarship Program has been created by his family to honor his memory. This program aims to support graduating High School student athletes pursuing higher education by providing one time financial assistance. The scholarship is part of a broader legacy of philanthropy established by the Sherman family. Senior High School students interested in this scholarship should keep an eye on announcements and updates regarding application timelines at Hiroshi Miyamura High School.

John Bonifacio Sherman (1992-2010) was a senior at Miyamura High School (HS), set to graduate in the early summer of 2011. He was an enthusiastic football player with a deep passion for grappling, kickboxing, dirt biking, and, most importantly, his family and friends.

During his junior year, John earned recognition as an All-District First Team member and was named Defensive Player of the Year for the Miyamura HS Patriots. His dedication on the field mirrored his commitment to his hobbies, which included football, skateboarding, and mixed martial arts. John cherished spending time with friends and engaged in outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.

He had a playful spirit, often taking on the role of the prankster and being the life of the party. His ability to make people smile left a lasting impression on those around him. John’s vibrant personality and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In 2025, individuals aged 73 or older with traditional IRAs can reduce their tax burden by utilizing Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs). This allows them to direct funds from their IRA accounts straight to a qualified charity, satisfying their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). This method is beneficial as it not only lowers the taxable income by excluding the QCD distribution from being taxed, but also fulfills charitable intentions without needing to itemize deductions. Each eligible individual can donate up to $108,000, while couples can combine their efforts for a total of $216,000. Thus, QCDs serve as an effective strategy for charitable giving while enhancing tax efficiency.

Please consult your tax accountant or preparer to see if you’re eligible to use the Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD). See IRS Tax Tip 2022-171, November 8, 2022 for further details. Please contact us (or your IRA bank account Custodian or Trustee) using the online form to exchange and provide the necessary bank account information to complete the QCD donation transfer.
